"Border as a place"
Performance/happening
2019

KUNO's intensive course “Border as a place” took place at the Estonian Academy of arts- Narva Art Residency, which brought together young Icelandic, Norwegian and Estonian artists.

The historically diverse industrial city of Narva marks the border between Estonia and Russia and the important eastern border of the European Union. The different political / cultural / economic / industrial / geographical layers that define the city, create a semiotically rich environment that provides source materials for different fields of research.

The course focused on the Kreenholm manufactory, which empty facade was a canvas for us. The emphasis was on experiencing the place and the question of how does the new generation of artists relate to the differences that borders mark and create?

We decided to leave the Kreenholm textile factory area and instead, tried to connected with the people of the city by offering them self made, apple pie, apples and herbal teas- all made from the plants that grew on the factory's premises. The factory itself may be closed but in spite of everything it still "produces" products.

We chose one of the liveliest places in Narva- Maxima supermarket. We tried to connect with the locals in front of the crowded supermarket - many of whom were former employees of the Kreenholm factory. Hearing stories about the past - the glory times and the downfall of Kreenholm, showed us of how closely Kreenholm is intertwined with the identity of residents in Narva.
