"Karoliina"
textile installation
2021

According to pagan beliefs, bringing a spruce branch into a room protects it from evil. The hair symbol has a similar protective magical character. Combining these worlds in the form of this work, I create an imaginary ritual that tells the story of our own contemporary beliefs and attitudes in a modern sense of space

"Karoliina" is intertwined with references to women's spirituality, paganism, and folk religion. The witch figure is a strong symbol of broader feminist discourse, deeply rooted in misogynistic religious fanaticism. The stereotype of the witch is portrayed in Christian culture as a dangerous but much-needed Other. The feminist interpretation of the witch is an independent woman living on the fringes of patriarchal culture, and the definition of a pagan witch agrees with this statement.
