With their duo exhibition Beauty in the Belly of the Beast, Maria Izabella Lehtsaar & Sarah Nõmm explore intimacy, sexual self-expression, and the entanglement of love and violence.
Centered on the bedroom – a place to rest, dream and feel pleasure. The show treats “bedroom activities” as both private and shared, revealing vulnerability. Yet not all bedrooms are safe: alongside softness, violence can unfold under the roof of love.
Drawing on Beauty-and-the-Beast narratives and their revisions, the works ask what happens after the “happy ending,” and what beasts still sleep under the bed?
